Sutton Cycling Club

Founded in 1999, Sutton Cycling Club is a youth cycling club created to provide cycling opportunities for local young people, in a safe environment with access to British Cycling coaches and support. We hold weekly sessions each Saturday at Northey Ave, Cheam.

About the club

We focus on mountain biking and cyclocross, although there are frequent opportunities to try different cycling disciplines. Our club members enjoy the freedom of cycling and develop lifelong skills and habits.

Club Saturdays

Club Saturdays are the core of the club, where we concentrate on coaching our riders to gain skills and confidence in cycling and helping them develop their own cycling opportunities. Club Saturdays run during term time only.

Training Sessions

We hold week night training sessions throughout term time, these are seasonally tailored training sessions for CycloCross, Mountain Bike or on-line turbo training sessions.

Cyclo-cross

Cyclocross (CX) is fun, fast, and often muddy. It is an ideal way to start racing. The club has qualified coaches and a history of being successful in CX over many years.

Mountain Biking

Mounting Bike (MTB) is accessible and fun for all. The club is well placed with access to local parks and routes.

Track Cycling

The club often goes Track cycling at the London Olympic Velodromes. We go to both the 2012 Velodrome at Lee Valley as well as the 1948 Velodrome at Herne Hill.

What's on?

Club History

Formed in 1999 by local cycling enthusiasts to provide opportunities for young people to develop their cycling skills in safety with others of the same age, under the supervision of experienced coaches. Being a solely youth focused club, our adult members are graduating Junior Riders, Parents, Coaches or Club Officials.

A Go-Ride Club

We are affiliated to British Cycling, the sport's national governing body, and is part of the British Cycling Go-Ride scheme. Local Go-Ride clubs are fantastic places to get out on a bike, whether it’s part of a coached session, a group ride or accessing some amazing cycling facilities. With over 90% of the Great Britain Cycling Team starting out in Go-Ride Clubs, they are a great place to start for aspiring champions. In 2006 the club first gained Clubmark accreditation, awarded by Sport England and British Cycling. In 2009 named Sutton Sports Club of the Year in the Sutton Sports Awards.

Racing

We have a club based racing league and this is often a gateway for some of our riders to go on to race regionally, nationally and internationally. Our local Cyclocross league is the London & SE 'Cross League, runs September through to February . Many of our riders have competed at National Cyclocross Trophy and Championship level. For MTB we are lucky to have two leagues that run events through the summer: SouthernXC (Southern region) Mud, Sweat and Gears (Eastern & S.Eastern region).

Successful riders

Previous club riders have gone on to compete at the highest levels of cycling. Joanna Rowsell multiple Olympic Champion and world Champion on the track. Corrine Hall who is on the GB Paralympic squad as a tandem pilot. Erick Rowsell was another Club rider who went on to Junior success and was in the British Cycling team. In 2015 former club rider Louise Mahé won the first Women’s Tour de Yorkshire. In 2005 we had two national champions riding in Club colours: Joanna Rowsell, Junior Women's Pursuit, and Louise Mahé, Junior Women’s Road Race. The club has always performed well in our local and regional MTB, CX and Closed Road racing leagues. The Club has provided most of the London Borough of Sutton Cycling team for the London Youth Games for a number of years, coming 2nd in 2019.
