Local Heroes.

Sutton Cycling Club is marking its 10th Birthday with a year of ten special events for its young riders, a 10th Birthday Challenge, and the honouring of ten "Local Heroes." Club Secretary Catherine Mahé explains:

"The success of any club depends on its volunteers, and Sutton CC/De Ver Cycles is no exception. We felt that the 10th Birthday AGM would be an ideal opportunity to acknowledge this formally, and publicly thank those who have given up their time and worked so hard for the Club since it was founded in 1999, or have helped in other ways to put it on the map. As "Local Hero" is the name of our Club Newsletter, we decided on the name "Local Hero Awards," and chose ten Local Heroes for this 10th Birthday year. From next year on we will add one Local Hero a year to our roll of honour,"

The special presentation took place at the Club's AGM on Saturday, 28th February, which was combined with a Fun Morning for its young members,

The morning started with a Team Skills Relay, the youngsters being split into four teams of mixed age and ability. This involved completing a bicycle slalom, riding under limbo bars, picking up and setting down a bottle, dismounting, remounting and sprinting back for the handover. Speed was not all, as time penalties were imposed for missing any of the obstacles. The children's competitive spirit came out, cheering their team-mates on to a close finish. The second event was a Sprint Relay - riding half the course, then dismounting and running the second half, wheeling the bike. The lead changed many times (to wild excitement) and the finish was again nail-bitingly close. Final placings for both events were 1st: Team A, 2nd: Team D, 3rd: Team C & 4th: Team B.

AGM

In the pavilion there were displays of the Club's activities in 2008 and of its achievements from 1999 - 2008, with Newsletters, scrapbooks and press-cuttings books to browse through. The normal business of the AGM was conducted briskly, the Club reporting another successful year. The Secretary then announced the 10th Birthday Challenge. This has options to suit all abilities and tastes - members can complete Ten Birthday Specials, a Ten Mile Challenge, a Ten Ride Challenge or a Ten Race Challenge. They can choose one Challenge, mix and match or go for all four!

Local Hero Awards

The Secretary explained that in its 10th Birthday year, the Club had decided to initiate "Local Hero" awards to mark its appreciation of the contribution made by those who had helped put the Club on the map - in particular its volunteers. In the first year of the awards, there would be ten Local Heroes. She announced them in order of their joining the Club. Certificates were presented to those present by Greg Zietz, a youth member who joined in February 1999 and is still with the Club. There were extra smiles all round when he presented one to his father, Rob!

Local Heroes Clive Oxx and John Cosstick both commented on how much smaller Greg had been when he first joined the Club! John also said how delighted he was to see the Club doing so well, and Clive pointed out that Peter Fordham had been the prime mover in founding the Club.

Sadly, Chris Law, David Randall and Joanna Rowsell were unable to attend the AGM. However, we were delighted to have a message from Joanna who was on a training camp in Majorca prior to the 2009 World Track Championships in Poland - that she was honoured to accept the Local Hero award and appreciates all the help and support she received whilst she was a member of the Club- She hopes to be able to accept her Award in person at a later date.

Birthday Cake

The morning finished with a delicious Birthday Cake made by mum Yvonne Woolven and splendidly decorated with the Club's logo. I only managed to taste some crumbs that were left over, it went so quickly!
